If there's one thing I never tire of doing in Punta del Este, it's watching the sunset. No matter how many times I see it, each time is different, magical, and reminds me why I love this place.
In Punta del Este, watching the sun set over the sea is almost a ritual. Locals and tourists alike stop, the sky turns golden, and when the sun finally sets, applause marks the end of another day. It's a beautiful tradition, a way to give thanks for everything we've experienced and for what's yet to come.
Today I want to share with you my favorite places to enjoy the sunset in Punta del Este. Most of them are free, accessible, and perfect for connecting with nature (and with yourself). And at the end, I'll tell you the only paid spot that's still worth visiting at least once in your life.

Pier 3 — one of the quietest spots to watch the sunset
One of my favorite spots—and probably the simplest—is Muelle 3, on Rambla General Artigas, across from Playa Mansa. There, time seems to stand still. I like to arrive a few minutes before sunset, sit with a mate, and simply watch the sea turn golden.
The sound of the water, the smell of salt, and the gentle breeze create a unique atmosphere. It's ideal for those looking for a peaceful and authentic sunset in Punta del Este, without crowds or noise. And, if you enjoy photography, you'll find a thousand ways to capture that perfect moment.

The Port of Punta del Este — a classic that never disappoints
Watching the sunset from the port is one of those experiences I recommend to everyone who visits the city. Between the sailboats and the golden reflections of the water, the landscape becomes a living postcard. Personally, I love walking along the docks and watching the colors change minute by minute, until the sky fades and the port lights begin to twinkle.
It's a perfect way to end the day: you can stay for dinner at one of the nearby restaurants or simply enjoy the maritime atmosphere. It's, without a doubt, one of the best places to watch the sunset in Punta del Este.

Punta Ballena Lookout — the classic that never goes out of style
If there's one spot all locals love, it's the Mirador de Punta Ballena. The view from there is breathtaking: the Atlantic Ocean, Portezuelo Bay, and the sun slowly setting over the horizon. Every time I go, I feel like it's impossible to get used to such beauty.
This is one of those places where the applause at sunset feels the most intense. There's something special about sharing that moment with strangers, all looking toward the same spot, giving thanks for a new day.

Mirador de Laguna del Sauce — a well-kept secret
If you prefer something quieter and surrounded by nature, I recommend the Mirador de Laguna del Sauce. It's a little further away, but totally worth it. From above, you can see the lagoon reflecting the sky and the sun slowly setting, with the hills and greenery all around.
I like to go when I want to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a moment of silence. It's one of the most magical and lesser-known places to watch the sunset near Punta del Este.

Casapueblo — an experience you have to experience at least once
And although it is not free, I can't leave out Casapueblo, the museum-workshop of the artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, located in Punta Ballena. Watching the sunset from its white terraces, with the sea in the background and the voice of Vilaró himself reciting his poem "Ceremony of the Sun", is one of the most exciting experiences I have ever had.
Every time I return, I feel like time has stopped. It's more than just a sunset: it's art, history, and emotion. If you're in Punta del Este, Casapueblo is a place you have to visit at least once in your life.

Sunset: a tradition that unites everyone in Punta del Este
What I love most about sunsets in Punta del Este is that no matter where you are or who you are, we're all looking toward the same point on the horizon, waiting for that magical moment. And when the sun sets, the applause comes naturally. It's a simple yet deeply symbolic custom: a round of applause for the sun, for life, and for new beginnings.
These are my favorite places to say goodbye to the day in Punta del Este, but I know there are many more magical spots hidden between the sea and the hills.
